Additionally, by making Taeko an average young woman, Takahata seems to suggest that, while Miyazaki’s fantasy stories are nice, they are just that - fantasies. The way that the character handles her relationships with the men around her, both as a child and an adult, help alter the course of her life and the film’s main focus is an examination on whether it has been healthy for her development as an adult. Only Yesterday focuses on an average young woman, who unlike Miyazaki’s characters, allows herself to be defined by the men around her, for better or for worse. While this film was not Takahata’s first film for Studio Ghibli, it was his first film to predominantly focus on a female character. However, Isao Takahata’s Only Yesterday (1991)is a break from tradition with the studio in several ways.
